Sink
Model and mold for a sink
I guess I've made molds for just about "everything but the kitchen sink", and on that point I've come close... with a mold for a bathroom sink.
In 2018, I did a project for Sherle Wagner International, a manufacturer of luxury bath fixtures, with a factory in Fall River, MA. The job was to make a model and mold for a big under-mount bathroom sink.
It was, for me, a large-sale, complex project. I enjoyed solving the problems of creating and assembling these plaster parts, but frankly, I was a bit skeptical about the mold's success in production. The piece is, as I said, large, and presents some inherent technical issues, both in casting and firing. However, Erik Wilhelmsen, Ceramic Manager, did a great job of problem-solving in this regard. Using my block mold, he also made an impressive set of cases and production molds. At my suggestion, he also made molds for a custom "setter" (a sacrificial ceramic part to support the piece during firing.)
The sinks have been successfully produced in an initial run.
Below, some pictures of my process in making the plaster model and then the block mold.
There is also a picture of one of the case molds that Erik made from my block mold.
