Tony Duquette

The new Tony Duquette collection from Mottahedeh

Mottahedeh, manufacturer of fine tableware, introduced their new Tony Duquette collection at the NY Tabletop Show in April 2013.

Tony Duquette (1914-1999) was an internationally acclaimed Hollywood set and costume designer who also was known for his theater design, artwork, jewelry, and lavish interior design.

After his death, his design business and brand were inherited by his design collaborator and business partner, Hutton Wilkinson. Duquette's designs are now produced by luxury brands in silk, furniture, lighting, rugs, and now in porcelain and faience by Mottahedeh.

In 2012-13, I sculpted the master models for two groups of pieces in the Mottahedeh/Duquette collection. Working from Duquette's concept sketches and a collection of reference pieces, I developed the shapes and sculpting for Coral dinnerware line. The pieces, made in Portugal, are of a unique ten-sided form, decorated on their wide rims with relief sculpting of coral, which is hand-painted in red, platinum, or gold.

I also modeled two sculptural tureens and stands for the collection, made in Italy of hand-painted faience.

We expect there will be additions to both of these lines this year.
