Pewabic Celtic Vase
Model and Block Mold for a Pewabic Reproduction
In 2016, I made a model and block mold for Pewabic Pottery of Detroit, one of a number of projects I've done for this venerable company.
The piece was to be a reproduction, in reduced size, of a historic Pewabic vase in their collection. The vase was decorated with a relief design of a ribbon, in a pattern reminiscent of Celtic knots.
I made a drawing based on photos provided by Pewabic. Then I lathe-turned the vase shape and applied the ribbon in rough form in plasticine. Through a series of waste molds and castings, I refined the ribbon and finalized the model. Then I made a four-part block mold. Cases and production molds were made in the factory. I like how the piece came out!
