Souvenirs of an education
Three ceramic pieces given to me by three of my teachers in the 1970's:
Large platter, Jun Kaneko (RISD)- While teaching at RISD, Jun learned to throw large platters, and so, with typical energy, he made 100 of them. On many, such as this one, he cut into the bisque ware using a circular saw with a masonry blade, to create slots and shapes. It's a cool piece, but it's a reject, as the slip decoration on the rim is flaked off in places (which is why I have it).
Large porcelain vase, Norm Schulman (RISD) A subtle, quiet porcelain form with two impressions from a mold of a seashell. Heavily potted and therefore very stable, handsome and useful for large flower arrangements.
Stoneware tea bowl, Jerry Rothman (CSU, Fullerton) One of a series of tea bowls that Jerry made for a show in Japan. A lively, animated piece that speaks to Jerry's well-designed, heavy-handed style.
