Mottahedeh & Co.
Mottahedeh is known for producing the highest quality tableware and giftware in porcelain, faience, brass, and other materials, with an emphasis on reproduction china, historically-inspired forms, and museum-licensed products.
(Here is a link to Mottahedeh's self-description.)
I have worked for many years with Mottahedeh- first with the founder, Mildred Mottahedeh, and now with the current president, Wendy Kvalheim.
In a typical project, Mottahedeh will give me an assignment based on a concept and some reference artifacts, and I develop designs and plaster models of a product. Factories, mostly in Portugal and Italy, use these models to make their molds. These intriguing shapes, in porcelain, with excellent handpainting and ambitious, beautiful decals, result in spectacular products. (Note that my work is in shape development, I don't claim credit for the 2-D decoration)
